Making Solo-preneur and Freelancing a Sustainable Career

Many solo-preneurs and freelancers work alone most times and occasionally with other associates.  Work volume and income fluctuates depending on projects clinched.  Hence, there will be weeks of  non-stop work, followed by weeks of inactivity.  Through business up’s and down’s, how does one ensure that one’s mood remain constant and not be affected excessively by the changing “business cycles”?

I belong in this category of workers and would like to share 4 ways that I find helpful.

Read or watch current affairs and latest tabloid news

These give me a sense of what’s happening “out there” politically, economically, socially, technologically, legally and environmentally , using the PESTLE framework to make sure I’ve covered most of the “important” areas. The frivolous tabloid news makes life less serious.

Interact and talk to real people

Interact and talk to real people – like family and friends. Networking and making new acquaintances once in a while helped widen the circle of acquaintances and friends over time.   With the Internet and Eventbrite, it is easy to suss out events to attend, from paid to free ones.

Me time

Give yourself up to do what you enjoy.  See it as “me time”, a form of self-love and self-care.  It tends to make you feel good, valued and revitalised. So never deny yourself this.

Understand yourself to better self-manage

We know ourselves best thus, making us our own best friend and worst enemy, too. Some detachment at looking at ourselves through the lens of profiling tools can throw up insights and refreshing angles (of ourselves) that we’ve never thought of. This may lead us to try something we’ve never tried before or approach a problem differently.

If you are a solo-preneur or freelancer, do share how you take care of yourself, mentally and psychologically to make this career a sustainable one.
