Routine is a Friend in Times of Change

When I was younger, I was given to spontaneity, full of ideas and always impatient to try them out. With age and hindsight, my spontaneity is curbed a little.  The prospect of sleeping late to burn the midnight oil had held me back more than once from chasing an idea. In the past, I could just do it and recover my sleep later.  So that’s one change I noticed about me.

Another change I noticed is settling into a routine. Not the auto-pilot “wake up, brush teeth” kind but a routine of doing certain activities every day or every week. For example, work-wise: set aside one day a week to plan my week’s focus and the to-do list. Health-wise, set a
routine to jog or work out at the gym three times a week.

Such routines set a cadence for me to intentionally plan my working life and not just do whatever falls into my lap. It helps me stay focused on different aspects of running my business. Extended lull periods in my work make me sick of this routine while after a busy, hectic stretch of work that disrupts this routine, I look forward to slipping back into its comfortable folds. I’ve come to appreciate that having a routine makes me feel whole and is like a balm on my mental wellness.

In today’s world of non-stop transformational change and digitalisation, routine is scarce in corporate employees. If you are a people manager, don’t scoff at routine. Understand that it affords a degree of familiarity, stability and rest to employees in a turbulent workplace.

What is needed is to help your people find a new routine arising from the changes. Sounds oxymoronic right? Change yet establish a routine. Maybe form a “flexible routine” – have a routine but tweak it when the conditions change. An article by Katy Milkman on A Flexible
Routine Can Help You Change for Good could show you how.

May you find a routine or rhythm that energises and centres you as you go about your Life.
